CHEROKEE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Alternative Spring Break

My Role

Project Director

Project Duration

One Week

Problem

During 'Alternative' Spring Break 2012, fourteen volunteers from the Savannah College of Art and Design were asked to help rebrand and redesign elements of tourist attractions and educational programs run by the Cherokee Historical Society.

Approach

Fourteen students were recruited for key skill sets including Interior Design, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Film and TV, and Production Designer. Most had never met before the morning of our departure. Over a three-day period, we all grew closer as we participated in team building exercises, client interviews, conducted research on the history of the Cherokee people and collaborated together to create artwork and designs that would help tell the story and celebrate the rich culture of the Cherokee people.

Solution

Our Interior Designers created marketing strategies and retail layouts as well as redesigned the box office and concessions for the Mountainside theater and the Oconualuftee Indian Village. The Production Designers developed renderings for a new children’s theater and box office. Renderings of 1770s style clothing and flats were executed by our Fashion Designers. The Graphic Designers created new logos for the Mountainside Theatre and the Tsalagi Touring Program, (a traveling arts and crafts educational experience), a theatre map, directional signage, and the 2012 Unto These Hills Souvenir Program. While our Film and TV crew worked behind the scenes to document the project.

Result

Our team created an exciting, cohesive, sustainable, and forward looking set of designs and blue-sky concepts, the best of these have been adopted and implemented. We left with new friends, design collaborators, and knowing that we in this short period of time did something really important, something that made a difference in our lives and the lives of others! That’s what ASB is all about!
