LEGENDS OF GOLF POSTER COMPETITION

Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament

“…many dedicated volunteers and sponsors have helped us raise over $1.9 million for local charities.”

—Champions Tour President Mike Stevens

My Role

Art Director and Designer

Problem

Although Golf is not my favorite pastime I gladly volunteered for the challenge of art-directing posters for the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, the tournament that showcased the greatest golfers of yesterday and today, and credited with sparking the creation of the Champions Tour.

Approach

The event was held at Savannah, Georgia, a beautiful city boasting of Southern charm and old-fashioned hospitality. Savannah was an attractive venue for the Legends, with the field regularly including true golf legends Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus. The primary challenge was to keep it fresh each year, and to help the designers understand that whether they enjoyed golf or not, that it should not affect the efficacy and visual impact of their posters.

Solution

To encourage them, I created my own posters and challenged them to beat me. Many beautiful posters were created for the competition throughout the years. My entry won in 2007; It depicts silhouettes of golfers and fans along the banks of a bustling Savannah river with the city skyline in the background.

Result

I was responsible or the creation of 10 poster designs and for the establishment of a scholarship with a $12,000 donation from Liberty Mutual. Each year the winner received $1000. After I was announced the winner in 2007, I donated the $1000 prize to the Jim Bostwick Scholarship. Jim was one of my former professors and a colleague whom I greatly respected.
