Problem

I was asked to create murals for five tanning rooms at a local hair stylist and tanning salon called "The French Connection.” Each room was an 8 foot by 32 foot cube. What to do?

Approach

I decided to create five scenes of the French Riveira. The scenes would repeat, meaning that the viewer could turn 360 degrees and the scene wouldn’t end. I also took inspiration from the colors of the tanning beds and the 20th Century travel posters that I’d been infatuated with since childhood.

Solution

The final scenes are reminiscent of the travel posters created by A. M. Cassandra and Horace Taylor—with exotic landscapes and picturesque architecture that instantly set the viewer daydreaming.

Result

The murals offer smooth planes of exceptionally bright color that make each room look inviting and unique. Customers enjoyed the designs, many having a favorite room that was requested each session.
